Our vision and goal for this gut renovation was to create a four-bedroom, four-and-a-half bath home with a new family-oriented layout that celebrated some of the original character of the house while promoting cleaner, more functional transitional design elements. In September 2022, our Cambridge Victorian Residence was awarded the IFDA’s Best Transitional Kitchen in New England.

The design involved digging down the basement to create a playroom, full bathroom, gym, and storage space. At the first floor, the layout was opened up to better accommodate this young family, but it maintains a formal living room, family room, and dining room. The addition of a mudroom with tons of storage for coats, shoes, strollers, and kids’ bikes was crucial, and they converted a covered porch to create this space. The design called for a much more open and functional kitchen, with a counter to ceiling marble slab backsplash and a pantry with a pocket door. Our clients also wanted to create a better connection to the backyard, where they added a patio and newly landscaped yard. A half bath was created off the hallway. The formal living room maintained the vintage marble mantle but was modernized with a Capiz shell globe light fixture.

At the second floor, we created two bedrooms, a full bathroom to serve those rooms, and a primary suite. Additional square footage was added above the covered porch and a laundry closet was created. At the third floor, we designed an office with a small porch and tons of natural light, as well as another full bathroom and guest bedroom.
