Even though the pandemic stopped so many things in our lives, it did not stop time—or children—from moving on. One emerging trend we have noticed in architecture this year is that many clients are approaching us as recent empty nesters with children that left for or completed college during the pandemic, and they are now ready to move forward with the renovations that they have been thinking about for a long time.

With kids out of the house, there is an opportunity for reflection and consideration of the changing needs within the physical space of a home. Instead of making room for highchairs or teenagers cramming around kitchen islands, our clients are thinking about hosting family and friends for cocktails and dinner parties. Some are looking to renovate their kitchens now that they don’t have to contend with kids beating up on the house day in and day out. Many clients no longer need a giant mudroom or a refrigerator that can house food for weeks at a time. Others want to create an art studio or hobby room that got shelved many years ago. Creating space for self-care is another priority, and homeowners are interested in new gym spaces or larger, more luxurious primary bathrooms.
